Coverstocks
Coverstocks, or the material the ball is made with, are a great indicator of how the ball will perform on the lanes.
Solid reactive
Solid Reactive balls grip the lane earlier and hook in a smooth, gradual curve rather than a sharp turn. These are great for heavier oil, when you need extra grip to avoid the ball sliding too far before it turns.
Pearl reactive
Pearl Reactive balls slide through the front part of the lane with very little grip, saving up energy for one sharp hook near the end. These are good to use when the lane has dried out in the front, or when you need the ball to travel farther before it hooks.
Hybrid reactive
Hybrid Reactives are like a mix of Solid and Pearl. They slide a bit farther than the solid, but grip more predictably than the pearl. These are useful for middle-of-the-road conditions, or when you want a bit of both length and control.
Urethane
Urethane balls grip the lane early like the solid, but instead of snapping into a sharp turn, it just rolls forward in a smooth, controlled path. Try using these on shorter or lighter-oil conditions where you want predictability over a big hook.
